What it fixes
Every Excel repair, explained
fixmydocument reads the actual XML inside your .xlsx file — the same format Excel uses internally — and corrects the specific problem, rather than just re-saving the file and hoping it goes away. Below is what's checked on every file, and why each one matters.
Fix a spreadsheet's phantom used range
Excel often "remembers" data far past your last real row or column, so the scrollbar goes on forever and the file is far bigger than it should be. This resets the sheet's recorded dimensions to match what's actually there.
Rebuild a broken calculation chain
Removes the cached calculation order that Excel sometimes gets wrong after heavy editing — a common cause of formulas showing stale results. Excel rebuilds it cleanly the next time the file opens.
Unhide every worksheet
Makes hidden and "very hidden" sheets visible again in one step, rather than hunting through right-click menus sheet by sheet.
Unhide rows and columns
Clears hidden flags from every row and column across the whole workbook at once.
Remove external workbook links
Deletes references to other workbooks that trigger the "this workbook contains links to other data sources" prompt every time the file opens, and can silently pull in outdated numbers.
Clear hidden author and editor metadata
Blanks out the author and last-modified-by fields Excel stores in the workbook's hidden properties.
Strip embedded macros
Removes any VBA macro project bundled inside the workbook.
Shrink pivot table caches
Pivot tables silently store a full duplicate copy of their source data inside the file. This clears that cached copy so it rebuilds fresh on next refresh, often cutting file size dramatically.
Clear redundant conditional formatting
Removes duplicate or overlapping conditional formatting rules that accumulate over repeated edits and slow the sheet down.
Deduplicate cell styles
Merges near-identical cell format entries, fixing the "too many different cell formats" error Excel throws on heavily edited files.
